Cricket

By Andy Challenger, SSPP

St. Peter and St Paul School Cricket Team

Over the summer St. Peter and St. Paul School, Lincoln were provided with new pink match balls. These proved a hit (literally) with both our own players and our various opponents throughout the 2010 season.

The high visibility made the game more entertaining with players and spectators able to pick the ball out with ease.

This particular picture was taken at SSPP after a narrow, last ball defeat by Stoneyhurst College from Lancashire, and features both sets of U14 players.

Many thanks for your support it made a massive difference to many, many young cricketers.

Heighington Tennis Club

By Chris Green
(Hon. Chairman, Heighington Tennis Club)

Due to patchy weather, this year’s tournament took place over two Sundays, 19th September for the adults, and 26th September for the junior players.

Eighteen players enjoyed a mixed doubles competition which was won by Alex Sharpe and Amy Braund, with Andrew Whitaker and Stefan Scigala runners-up.

As the junior competition was delayed by a week, well into school term time, some of our players were unable to attend. The winner was Christopher Forman, with Craig Lucas as runner-up.

The showery weather made life difficult for us this year, but even so, the tournament was a huge success, and the Club is very appreciative of the kind support provided yet again by the Junior Sports Programme.

HBW United Football Club

By Richard Naulls

HBW United Football Club was ‘formed’ in June 2009. The club is the result of the merging of Heighington, Branston and Washingborough Junior Football clubs.

The club provides the opportunity for local boys and girls to play football competitively and for fun, using the facilities available to us within the three villages.

The club currently has over 200 registered members and 14 teams registered with the local leagues.

We are currently in the process of applying for FA Charter Status and also working in partnership with the local Parish Councils in order to improve sporting facilities within our area.

The club is run by volunteers and we rely on the support of sponsors and outside agencies to assist us in our goal of providing the opportunity for the youths to be able to play football.

Hodgson and Elkington have very kindly supported us by providing us with a number of match balls and equipment to assist us during the course of the forthcoming season, for which we are eternally grateful.

If it was not for companies like Hodgson and Elkington then many local clubs would not be able to continue providing the opportunities for children to participate in their respective sports and they should be applauded in their efforts to assist.

Lincoln Griffins Ladies Football Club

By David Lloyd

This year’s Lincoln Griffins Ladies Football Club presentation evening was held at the Lawn in Lincoln on May 21st.

Amongst the many awards given out on the evening was a new one. This year, thanks to Hodgson Elkington, we gave a silver plate for Fair Play.  It was decided to give this inaugural trophy to our U15 team.  Each player in the U15’s also received a memento medal also supplied courtesy of Hodgson Elkington.

The U15 team was chosen as they played a whole season, winning only one league game and often did not have a full strength team against some strong opposition.

Despite this they played in a fun way and showed their team spirit by never getting into arguments when times were tough or taking it out on players when mistakes were made.

They played every game in a good spirit and when the games finished they were always the ones with smiles on their faces showing that they were there to enjoy themselves come what may.

The club wishes to thanks The Junior Sports Programme for this award which will be used for several years to come giving the committee another headache on who to choose for this lovely trophy each year.

Welton Football Club U13s

Welton Football Club was formed in 1986 and was given the standard charter award in 2007. The 2009/2010 season sees us fielding 22 sides, being represented at every age group from under 7 through to under 18, and once again we will also be fielding an adult side.

We are the largest club in the Mid Lincs league, which means it takes alot of funding to enable the children involved to play football for us.

Our fundraising committee spend alot of time, organising events in order to raise money for the club and every extra penny helps.

We were pleased to be able to raise over £200 for the Rotary Club through sponsorship of friends and family” adding “This was the first real milestone in our training programme, we now have to fit in distance and stamina work  and then we have cold water and night swim training sessions to look forward to!”

Birchwood Colts JFC

By Cliff Penning

The Junior Sports Programme was happy to be able to assist Birchwood Colts JFC who are also currently running our Fair Play Awards scheme.

Birchwood Colts JFC was established in 1990. Initially there was just one boys team with a bare minimum of equipment, very limited volunteer support and coaches with no formal qualifications.

By 1995 the number of teams had increased to five playing in the Mid Lincolnshire League. Equipment and facilities had improved and outdoor training was provided at the Birchwood Community and Leisure Centre during the winter months.

Between 1995 and 2003 the club grew rapidly increasing to 13 teams. Two of these additional teams were girls teams competing in the Mid Lincolnshire League. In total over 200 young people were playing football for Birchwood Colts JFC, these included 15 young people who were on the “training to play programme”.

During 2003, 3 teams won league championships and one team finished as runners up.

In 2004 Birchwood Colts JFC achieved FA Charter Standard. This was also the year when the Clubs inaugural Girls team won their first piece of silver wear for the club by winning the U13 League Cup. The club has developed a nursery training session where players from 4 years old can participate in fun training sessions and hopefully these young players will form the nucleus of future teams.

During 2005/6 the Club’s Management Structure was reorganised to meet the future challenges ahead. Whilst the redevelopment of the Birchwood Sports Facilities proceeded, the club was temporarily reduced to nine competing teams (three of which are girls teams); but with the availability of improved facilities from the 2006/7 season the club has be able to increase the number of teams to offer football experience to more young people.

In 2009 Birchwood Colts JFC were awarded Lincolnshire FA Charter Standard Development Club of the Year and we are currently preparing an application to the Lincs FA to become an FA Charter Standard Community Club.
